DESCRIPTION:Western States Water Council is hosting a series of workshops over the summer to further explore technical and policy elements of a regional approach to Waters of the United States (WOTUS) definitions. \nThis first pre-workshop (virtual) will focus on regional classification schemes that could be applied to WOTUS determinations. A second pre-workshop (virtual) will be held on July 11 to discuss operational aspects of regional approaches to WOTUS. Both pre-workshops are intended to be technical in nature to provide input to a policy focused discussion at the WOTUS workshop hosted with the summer Council meeting in August. SUMMARY:Improving Snowmelt Runoff Forecasting
DESCRIPTION:The Western States Water Council and the California Department of Water Resources are cosponsoring a workshop on Improving Snowmelt Runoff Forecasting. Improving operational runoff forecasting to meet the needs of water managers and users is a challenge\, particularly given limited agency budgets for observations\, monitoring\, research\, development\, and modeling. Climate change and variability seem to be driven faster than our science and technological advances. Moreover\, it takes a relatively long period of time to put improvements in place and build confidence in accurate and durable projections. SUMMARY:The Second Colorado River Basin Data and Modeling Roundtable: Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Western States Water Council is hosting this second roundtable as a follow-up to the first “Internet of Water Roundtable: Colorado River Basin\,” organized by the Aspen Institute and Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions in January 2019 in Salt Lake City\, Utah. The Aspen Institute’s Dialogue Series on water data led to its report\, “Internet of Water: Sharing and Integrating Water Data for Sustainability\,” which presented a vision for a national policy framework to address institutional barriers to scaling and integrating water data and information to support sustainable water management. The first roundtable recommended continuing discussions and coordination among three ongoing projects\, the Internet of Water (IoW)\, the Water Data Exchange (WaDE) program\, and the OpenET project.  \n  \nThis second roundtable will bring together groups from Colorado River Basin federal and state agencies to present progress over the last year and discuss the next steps on modeling and data sharing.  The projects’ teams are working toward laying a foundation of open and interoperable water data and all have significant applications for water management in the Colorado River basin. DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID19 Travel Restrictions and Meeting Bans\, the S2S Workshop May 18-20\, 2020 is CANCELLED.  We intend to reschedule the workshop for May 2021.\n\nThe Western States Water Council and the California Department of Water Resources are cosponsoring a recurring workshop to continue a dialogue among western states\, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, and the research community on improving sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) precipitation forecasting to support water management decision-making. The agenda will include topics such as status of implementation of the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Act\, experimental seasonal statistical forecasts for California and the Colorado River Basin\, the Yuba-Feather forecast-informed reservoir operations pilot project\, and drought prediction. \nThe workshop is being held in San Diego\, California on May 18-20\, 2020 at the Doubletree San Diego Downtown. DESCRIPTION:WSWC/CDWR Workshop on Sub-Seasonal and Seasonal Precipitation Forecasting\n\nThe Western States Water Council and the California Department of Water Resources cosponsored a workshop on precipitation forecasting held May 27-29\, 2015 in San Diego\, California. \nREPORT: Workshop on Improving Sub-Seasonal and Seasonal Precipitation Forecasting for Drought Preparedness \nWORKSHOP PURPOSE: The purpose of the workshop was to develop a Western vision for improving precipitation forecasting at timescales beyond the two-week weather forecast time domain\, loosely modeled after the Council’s vision for an observing network for Western extreme precipitation. Improved forecasts of precipitation at longer timescales can be used for many purposes\, such as interstate compact or water rights administration\, planning for local water agency supply deliveries\, or flood season preparedness. Forecasting needs vary not only with the purpose of a forecast\, but also with geographic location\, because the seasonal pattern of storm activity and large storm types varies with location. Improved skill in precipitation forecasting can be achieved by improving prediction of large storm types\, such as atmospheric rivers on the West Coast or the monsoon in the Southwest. \nA workshop summary report will be prepared\, with the intent of using the report to inform a dialog with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center on taking advantage of prediction skill that may be available at a regional (Western) scale to improve the outlooks now issued at a national scale. SUMMARY:(2014) Remote Sensing Applications Workshop

DESCRIPTION:Workshop on Hydroclimate Monitoring Systems and Measurement Needs\n\nThe Western States Water Council and the California Department of Water Resources are cosponsoring a workshop to discuss strategies for supporting and improving key observing systems\, to be held in San Diego on June 23-25\, 2014.  The workshop will begin Monday\, June 23 at 1:00 pm and conclude Wednesday\, June 25 by 12 noon.  Topics to be covered include an overview of the funding status of key federal monitoring programs\, development of a 21st century observing system for extreme precipitation in the West\, emerging opportunities for supplementing ground-based observations with remote sensing\, and strategic planning for sustaining long-term observing records. \nLOCATION/LODGING: A block of rooms has been reserved and will be held through June 2\, 2014.
