Issue #2665

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Western States Water Council (WSWC) celebrated its 60th Anniversary at its summer meetings in Snowbird, Utah.
  • Council members discussed strategic planning, including increased interactivity, setting focus topics, refining resolutions, and improving new-member orientation. A key theme was WSWC’s strength as a unified, governor-appointed voice uniquely positioned to influence federal policy on western water issues.
  • The Water Resources, Water Quality, and Legal Committees held detailed discussions on key issues including state water data tools, water quality initiatives, and evolving legal frameworks. Highlights included host state presentations in each committee, demonstrations of WSWC’s data platforms(WaDE, WestDAAT, WestCAT), review of the New Mexico Integrated Water Financing Plan, and state roundtables.
  • Four sunsetting policy positions were revised and re-adopted, covering radio frequencies for water data, extreme weather resilience, water R&D, and hydraulic fracturing.
  • The Executive Committee announced Director Tony Willardson’s retirement in September 2025 after 46 years of service. Tom Stiles also announced retirement.
