HIGHLIGHTS
- On June 23-24, the Western Governors’ Association met in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for its annual meeting hosted by WGA Chair Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, joined by six other governors and five U.S. Cabinet Secretaries. Discussions focused on regional challenges including energy, water, housing, and land management.
- On June 18, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed SB 7 and HJR 7 into law to support a $20 billion investment in state water infrastructure and supply. The constitutional amendment, subject to voter approval, dedicates $1 billion annually from state taxes to the Texas Water Fund.
- On June 20, the WSWC submitted a letter supporting the creation of a National Center for Ecologically Sustainable Water Conservation and Management. WSWC emphasized the need for a workforce trained in science, water law, and hydrological tools to manage increasingly scarce Western water resources.
- On June 20, WSWC urged DOI and NASA to fully fund the Landsat Next satellite mission, warning against budget-driven delays. The Council stressed that uninterrupted Landsat data is essential for managing water, monitoring agriculture, and supporting interstate compacts.
